New Born Baby – Gifting Options

Picking out a gift for a new born baby can be tricky – you want it to be for the baby, but something that the parent(s) will appreciate, because of course babies seem to have little or no preferences at that age. You want it to be something that is attractive and useful at the same time.

When it comes to gifts for new born babies, keep in mind that the parents have probably done most of their own shopping and so it is only prudent to ask what is needed or appreciated, before you decide to pick from among the following popular options –

Practical gifts

Helpful items such as gas drops, gripe water or a tummy waist band will help fussy babies calm down and give frazzled new parents much needed reprieve. Swaddling blankets will help a baby feel warm and secured, helping to aid restful and longer periods of rest for the baby, and consequently for the parents.

Diapers are always a welcome gift – you can pick the usual disposable ones, or smart reusable cloth ones for the environmentally conscious mom. Diaper rash cream is another gift that is always welcome. Baby wipes (look for alcohol free, unscented ones) that can be used to clean any part of baby; a leaky nose or a soiled bottom are something else that makes practical sense. Baby massage oil (again unscented; natural oils such as olive oil is best) may be another practical gift that the parents may just be very grateful for.

Pretty gifts

Beautiful blankets, soft and pretty clothes may be attractive gifts for baby but make sure that these are not superfluous additions to the nursery. Getting very small baby clothes may mean that the baby outgrows them before even having worn them. Receiving or swaddling blankets, hooded towels and so on will last for longer because the child will not outgrow them as easily, but it is possible to have too many of them, so it is best to consult with the parent to see if they really need it.

Rattles, pretty mobiles or teethers are about the only kinds of gifts that babies may appreciate so these may be good ideas as well.

A pretty and practical baby bag with lots of little pockets and divisions for storing a baby blanket, diapers, a change of clothes, feeding items and organic baby food so on is a huge help for parent short of time, because it is just that one thing to grab on the way out with baby.

Personalized gifts

There are a number of options here that will indicate to the new parents that care and thought has gone into the picking of a gift for their baby. Monogrammed blankets or pillows, towels, or bags; toys with baby’s name, may all be a good idea.

Gifts for mommy

Some jewelry or clothing for mommy may be much appreciated. Something else that will be very much appreciated is time – offer to baby products sit while the mother can have some much needed ‘Me’ time. Cook her a meal, or offer to run errands; those may be just the kind of ‘gifts’ she appreciates the most.
