Four countries comprise the United Kingdom. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Union Flag is the outcome of the combination, or union, of the countries that became united to come to be the United Kingdom. Richard I of England in 1194 introduced a flag with a red cross on a white background known as the Cross of St. George as the national flag of England.

James I, also identified as King James VI of Scotland, succeeded Richard I in 1603, throughout his reign he combined the Scottish flag of St. Andrew – a diagonal white cross on a blue background with the Cross of St. George.

The flag began to be acknowledged as “The Union” by 1707. When Northern Ireland became a component of the United Kingdom in 1801 King George III added the St. Patrick’s flag – a red diagonal cross on a white background, to the Union Flag. The flag of Wales was not incorporated into it as in 1606, when the Union Jack was made; Wales was already united with England.
