Key West’s Pirates and Shipwreck Museums – Experience the Adventure on the High Seas!
Nothing has captured the hearts and imagination of man for centuries than the swashbuckling and fearless adventures of pirates, shipwrecks and sunken treasure. Key West’s Pirate Soul Museum, Shipwreck Treasures Museum and the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum will take you on an unforgettable journey back to three centuries of adventure in the high seas.
Pirate Soul Museum
Key West’s Pirate Soul Museum is the ultimate pirate enthusiast’s dream and offers an unequaled collection of authentic and rare pirate artifacts. Through the use of interactive technology, visitors are brought back to the golden age of piracy where they’ll meet the period’s most notorious pirates.
Included in the interactive journey are nearly 500 museum-grade artifacts, along with Captain Kidd’s authentic journal of his final voyage, Blackbeard’s original wide-bore blunderbuss, and the only veritable pirate treasure chest in the world which once belonged to Captain Thomas Tew. Many more pirate artifacts will be added for display from the Delaware Art Museum and the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
Shipwreck Treasures Museum
Travel back through time to Key West in 1851 and relive the dangerous era of shipwrecks and how the treasures salvaged from these wrecks made Key West, America’s richest city. Visitors will get a glimpse of the shipwrecking industry through videos, interviews, and one of a kind underwater footage.
Discover the story of the ill-fated Isaac Allerton, which foundered on Key West’s treacherous reefs in 1856. View the many rare and authentic treasures salvaged from the Isaac Allerton wreck. Visitors will have a chance to meet Asa Tift (played by an actor), the most famous wreck salvager in Key West in the 19th century. Hear the stories as revealed by families who became rich in this adventurous yet perilous industry. Scour the reef for wrecks at the top of the 65-foot Lookout Tower just like the master wreckers of the mid-1800 did.
Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
In 1985, wreck hunter Mel Fisher and his underwater salvage team discovered the wrecks of the Santa Margarita and the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, part of the treasure-laden 28-galleon fleet which sank 50 miles off the Florida Keys during a hurricane. The treasure salvaged included gold, silver and emeralds, part of the riches stolen from Peru, Colombia and Mexico. The immense treasure on display in this museum is just as amazing as the incredible story behind the wreck’s discovery.
Another fascinating wreck on display is the British slave ship Henrietta Marie, a British ship which transported slaves to the Caribbean from Africa. It was discovered during the search for the treasure-laden galleons. GP
