how do I capture a control point in battlefield 1942?

Okay, obviously a stupid question. I walk up to the flagpole and I just stand there, but I don’t know what I have to do to capture the point and have my team’s flag go up? Thanks

Just stay near the flag. There should be a progress bar showing your progress in capturing the point when you are near the flag. Also, you can’t capture a point when the number of enemies in the capture zone or greater or equal to the number of players from your team in the capture zone.
