Decorating 101: Country Decorating

What exactly comes to mind when you think of country style decorating? Anything that recalls grandma’s house decades ago, including antique quilts and roosters are most likely what you think of. Today, country decorating is much lighter and cheery than before. The look takes on bright colors and delicate patters that help give the style a welcoming feeling that no other style of decorating can rival.

Colors are bright, airy and soft

The old days called for colors like rust, green, peach and blue for country decorating. Today, colors that you really wouldn’t expect in country décor should be used; colors like soft blue, yellow or taupe along with white-washed wood work perfectly. You don’t have to use burnt red as your decorating basis anymore.

Paint is everywhere

Do you remember the look of your grandmother’s living room walls or kitchen? Most likely the walls were filled with roosters, sunflowers, plate collections and more. In fact, there probably wasn’t room for much else? Sparsely decorated walls really help to add to the open, airy atmosphere.

You can paint the walls in a cheery yellow or bright white. Think about going with trim and baseboards that contrast. Add a splash of fresh color to the walls by decorating them with botanical prints or framed wildflowers.

If you have older furniture, all the better. Create a romantic country look by painting your furniture. When it comes to paint, just about anything can be painted; you can paint your walls and floors, you an even paint your accents and furniture. Then, you can sand the edges slightly after the paint has dried to ass to the worn, country appeal.

Open up the windows

If you have windows without heavy shades or draperies you should open them in order to keep up the light and natural atmosphere of feminine country decorating. If curtains are a necessity for you, use the ones that are sheer or lightweight and in light colors so that the room isn’t darkened. Maybe you should use delicate floral patterns to coordinate with the room’s colors, or consider a sheer lace valance.

White wood blind both look good and add more to the country appeal of the room. You can close them at night for privacy; however, during the day you can keep them open or raised to allow natural sunlight in.

Add a few old accents

Do you have a few items stored in a closet or attic? If you simply go through your old items you might be surprised at just what can work with the new décor. The use of old pillows, candle sticks or throws really help in adding interest and depth to the room. If you happen to have a sofa that’s solid in color, you should invest in some plaid or floral patterned throw pillows.

Sure, there are people that still love the old-time country look, but a look that makes the room feel fresh and breezy is what other people are looking for. Make sure to avoid clutter like the plague, and make sure that you use cheery shade of cream, soft blue, yellow and anything else from nature in the décor. Don’t worry about matching, you can take your furnishings from yard sales, flea markets or anywhere else. Painting mismatched furniture to give an old, worn and charming look is absolutely possible.
