why are there three stripes on the confederate flag?
this is the first confederate national flag:

the more famous flag is actually a battle standard, not a national flag. anyway, i know the thirteen stars represent the eleven confederate states plus Kentucky and Missouri, which the confederacy claimed. but what do the three stripes (or “bars”) represent? there were originally seven seceding states, not three.
The designer of the “Stars and Bars”, Prussian Nicola Marschall, may have based the “bars” on the Austrian flag.
