Racing, in all its forms, is by far one of the most broadly loved and relished kinds of sport worldwide. Once the race was concluded, all those involved would then get together to enjoy an evening meal. It is thought that in order to signify the meal was ready; a tablecloth would be waved in the air which would inform those people racing that the race must come to an conclusion. During this time, it just so happened that the typical pattern of tablecloths at this time was checkered. Soon after this, the waving of a checkered tablecloth turned into a recognized symbol that a race had come to an end which, after some time, prompted several checkered flags to be created to fulfill this specific purpose.

Sadly, this is simply a theory which is often ignored by many. Another opinion concerning the origin of checkered flags is that they were used as the combination of colors is readily identifiable to drivers shooting past in their cars. As speed can cause dust and thus, diminish visibility, it is considered the striking design of checkered flags would be easily recognizable to the drivers. Whichever hypothesis you decide to believe, there is no denying that the checkered flag is a strong symbol for racing and is one which is sure to remain unchanged for some time to come.
