Betsy Ross did not sew the first American flag people. Does anyone else know this?

Betsy Ross did not make the first American flag. In March 1870 her grandson William Canby lied before the Philadelphia Historical Society. He said his grandmother was visited by George Washington and asked to design the nation’s flag. The story was published in Harper’s Magazine without evidence to back his claim. By the mid-1880′s this lie was widely accepted and published in school history books. The first flag was drawn by an artist named Francis Hopkinson from a design probably suggested by Washington since it is similar to Washington Family’s English coat of arms.

I know that there is a lot of controversy over the making of the first flag.

The problem is that historians aren’t 100% sure who made the first American flag.

Most don’t think it was Betsy Ross, but it is a known fact that she did sew several American flags during her life time.

However, there are many historians who believe that is was completely possible for Mrs. Ross to have sewn the first flag as she was acquainted with General Ross (she was married to his nephew) and General Washington.

The conundrum is that there is no evidence to support that she did make the first flag and no evidence to disprove it either.
