Will Changing Flags And Public Holidays Appears Republican Australians

A new voice has joined Australia’s republican debate. A man recently lauded for his community work, Simon McKeon (Macquarie Bank chairman) was recently voted Australia’s Man of the Year 2010. And he’s now using his new accolade to voice his support for three key fracture points in the Australian identity. Centrally, McKeon is one of an increasing number of Australians who cannot see the logic in the British Queen being head of state in a country she lives as far away from as is humanly possible. To do this, he believes as many do that Australia should adopt a new flag, and should also change one of its major Australia holidays.

MeKeon feels that Australian identity isn’t just about colonial liberation: he also sympathises heavily with the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. On the left hand side of the Australian flag are the disputed colonial artefacts of the Union Flag and Commonwealth star. On the right are five stars. The five stars represent the constellation of the Southern Cross: look for it next time you Cruise Australia. Many feel that the Australian national flag lacks an identity, being similar to many other former British colonial flags. Meanwhile, the holiday which some object to is ‘Australia Day’, the 26th of January. Some object to the use of the 26th on the basis that it celebrates the invasion of White Europeans with their first landfall on Australian soil.

So, are you going to see a new flag when you next fly drive Australia? Suggestions for replacing the flag have been numerous, but few popular alternatives have presented themselves. Removal of the Union Jack has been considered numerous times, to be replaced by other flags or the Commonwealth star: whilst this would remove ‘subjugation’, it would remain somewhat indistinct. Others have suggested doing the same with the Australian Aboriginal Flag (A Yellow circle on Red and Black horizontal halves), though this has been resisted by even the flag’s original designer. In the early 90s, it seemed that flag-changing was a majority view, but in recent years opposition has grown once more.
