How to repair carved wood furniture?
I have a heavily carved antique piece with wood carvings broken off and missing. What material is best to replace wood carving, and how to ensure that it ADHERES WELL to the old wood? Carvings are on the lower legs of the piece. They are not deep, about 1/4′ deep or more but several inches wide wrapping around jumbo leg. At first glance I thought that they were appliqued, but are actually carved from the leg. I am sure that I can mold and/or carve to suit and restore finish. I would think of using regular wood putty but I am concerned that it may be brittle, easily bumped and come off. Is there any other material or procedure that I might consider? Input appreciated!
If it is antique and you want to maintain its value, you shouldn’t attempt a repair in the fashion you describe. You should carve replacement appliques from the same type of wood and apply them using hot glue. That way it could be corrected later if necessary.
