The Pittsburgh Steelers Are One Of The NFL’s Most Historic Teams

The Steelers are the 5th oldest franchise in the NFL.The team was founded by Art Rooney in 1933, and was originaly named the Pirates..  That was the same name as the city’s baseball team and it was common for NFL teams to do that.The team was renamed the Steelers before the start of the 1940 season..
The Steelers were able to make the play-offs for the first time ever in 1947..They lost the game 21-0 which would be their last play-off game for the next 25 seasons..

Chuck Noll became the Steelers head coach in 1969, then in 1970 the Steelers would begin playing their games in Three Rivers Stadium..By far, Chuck Noll’s greatest talent was his drafting ability..Starting in 1969 to 1974, Noll drafted 9 HOF players..  In 1974, 4 were selected in the same draft.A record like that will probably never be broken..
The Steelers started winning games and it all started with the great drafting..The Steelers bad luck finally changed, in 1972 the Steelers one thier fist play-off game off one of the great plays in sports history, the Immaculate Reception..The Raiders were holding on to a 1 point lead with only a few seconds left in the game..On a 4th and 10 play with nothing to lose, the Steelers QB Bradshaw attempts a pass downfield which looked as though it was incomplete…The pass was deflected backwards off the Raiders defender then caught by Steelers RB Franco Harris. Harris scampered into the endzone to seal the dramatic win..Some argue whether or not the play was legal, however the win started the Steelers dynasty of the 70′s..The Steelers pretty much dominated the 70′s. Winning 4 Super Bowls in 6 years, and going to the play-offs 8 of 10 years..

During the 80′s, the Steelers were pretty much a mediocre football team..Noll retired after the 1991 season, and Bill Cowher took over the head coaching job in 1992..For the first 6 seasons at coach, Cowher lead the Steelers to the play-offs each of those years..Paul Brown was the only other coach ever to accomplish that..  In 1995, Cowher and the Steelers made it to Super Bowl XXX, however they lost to the Cowboys.  10 years later, Cowher and the Steelers made it back to the Super Bowl.The Steelers beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL 21-10, which tied them with the Cowboys and 49ers with 5 Super Bowl trophies..Cowher resigned the following season as the Steelers went 8-8. He wanted to take a break from football and spend more time with his family..Cowher’s teams went to 6 AFC Championship Games, 2 Super Bowls, 1 Super Bowl win, and went to the play-offs 10 of the 15 years he coached..

Mike Tomlin won the head coaching job on January 22nd 2007..Tomlin was the Steelers first ever African-American head coach..Tomlin was impressive his first season as head coach, leading the Steelers to a 10-6 record and also to the play-offs..The Jaguars defeated the Steelers in the AFC Wild Card Game..  In 2008, the Steelers had a 12-4 record, and went to the Super Bowl as they defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23.Tomlin became the youngest coach ever to win the Super Bowl..The Steelers now have more Super Bowl trophies than any other franchise with 6 after that win..The Steelers missed the play-offs in the 2009 season as they went 9-7..Steelers managed a 12-4 record in 2010, and also returned to the Super Bowl..This time, the Steelers lost their 2nd Super Bowl as the Packers defeated them 31-25..The Steeles last Super Bowl appearance tied them up with Cowboys at 8 Super Bowl appearances. No other NFL teams have that many..
