BEIJING — French President Nicholas Sarkozy stepped up the pressure on China Saturday over its handling of the Tibet crisis by warning he may boycott the Olympic opening, following fresh violence.
Sarkozy’s warning, delivered by one of his ministers in the Le Monde newspaper, also came shortly after China said it would step up a controversial “education” campaign for Tibetans in an effort to end nearly a month of unrest.

SAN FRANCISCO (April 7) – Three people protesting China’s human rights record and the impending arrival of the Olympic torch climbed up the Golden Gate Bridge on Monday and tied the Tibetan flag and two banners to its cables.
The Dalai Lama has, a few days ago, asked that we not interfere with the Olympics out of respect for the people of China. He says that there are a few in power who are causing the problems, not the whole country and that they shouldn’t suffer for the sake of the few.
I pray that the Chinese will at least have talks with the Dalai Lama and that the young people of China will see what is really going on. The Prime Minister of Australia who speaks Mandarin is in China now and has given speeches at universities in Beijing where he talks about human rights an freedoms much to the Chinese gov’t's great displeasure.
