Why is being patriotic to your country considered to be a virtue?
1. Why is being patriotic to your country considered important and beneficial when it’s only an accident you got born there anyway?
2. Why is loyalty to your country considered to take precedence over loyalty to your house, town or state? Is it is because a country is larger?
3. If it is because it is larger, then shouldn’t loyalty to one’s continent or planet be more highly valued?

Okay, I can’t answer this question in a matter of 1.2.3. Until I have defined my idea of patriotism and virtue.
Patriotism is love for ones chosen country. It is not necessarily the country you were born in but the one that you choose and place your ideals in. The place you want your children to grow up in. Yes, arrogant I know to assume we all can choose our country but it is a core to my definition of Patriotism. If you did not choose your country at some point you would not sacrifice for it would you.
Virtue is a quality that is valuable, admirable, and good for the group aka society. Thinking of others before yourself, a characteristic where you try to make things better.
So if you see helping your country and sacrificing for it to be a good thing for your country aka society as a whole… then my answer would be yes Patriotism is a virtue.
The Second Part is hard to answer in that patriotism does not necessarily mean not being loyal to your local social network. It simply is a different type of loyalty. If it takes precedence there is a usually a threat that effects more people aka society.
And On the last part of your question, Of course we should sacrifice to save our planet. It is hard enough to be patriotic for our countries. I doubt getting the human race to be patriotic for the planet is likely in our lifetimes.
