What were their PHILOSOPHICAL JUSTIFICATIONS and PRACTICAL REASONS for seceding from the United States?
Why did the South believe they would win this confrontation with the national government
In the end, why did they lose?

The South was tired of the North forcing their will on them, even though the North had been throwing them a bone for the last couple decades with compromises. The South believed that they VOLUNTARILY joined the union, and therefore could leave anytime they liked. The South felt they could pull out if they wanted to if the North wasn’t being fair in their eyes. South Carolina tried to secede during Jackson’s presidency because they didn’t agree with the tariffs put on them. The South didn’t feel like it was part of one unified country anymore. The South felt they were not represented properly and were being taken advantage of due to the lack of majority of southerners in the house and senate for the most part in american history. They felt since they were not being looked after by the government, they didn’t need to be part of it. It goes back to the no taxation without representation argument from the war of independence.

The South believed they could win because they thought the North wouldn’t keep fighting if the South kept it on the defensive for the entire war. This worked until the South went on the defensive in Gettysburg and Antietam. The South also thought they could get England and France to join them because they shipped cotton to both countries. The South felt they had the better generals, which they did, and though this would lead to a speedy victory. The South also thought that their cause was a very noble one, and therefore could not fail.

They lost because they didn’t have as many men as the north, they had a lack of resources such as food, munitions, and railroads. They made the mistake of going on the offensive. The South also lost very valuable generals like Stonewall Jackson. They also lost due to Sherman’s March to the Sea, in which he enacted Total War, which is when you destroy everything in your path so the enemy cannot use it. The South basically was out of everything and couldn’t keep it going.
