College Scholarship Programs Offered In New York State
The state of New York has one of the finest reputations for advanced education throughout the entire country. It also has its share of scholarships and other forms of financial aid to assist its naturalized and born citizens enter one of these institutions of higher learning. Below is a selected sample of some of these merit-based programs. Don’t be remiss and not consult the state Board of Education for more and also look up free college degree.
The basic award is plainly called Academic Excellence. It provides $500 to $1,500 a year including schools that have five-year programs. To apply a student must do so through his or her secondary school, but have up to seven years to put it to use. It is for New York schools only.
In order to graduate, every New York State secondary student must take the Regents as well as the SAT. Besides being considered much tougher than the national test, it also offers its share of scholarships. For instance, top scorers who intend to study health care can win $10,000 a year through their Bachelor’s classes. Health care students can find many opportunities for assistance. All students will benefit by looking up free online college courses on the internet.
New York also offers a series of what some might call good citizen scholarships. For instance, the Memorial Scholarship is given to the dependents of policemen, fire fighters and others who lost their lives in the line of duty. The state will give up to the top tuition charged by a state school to those who qualify, but it can also be applied to a private university.
For the survivors of a former soldier, the state administers the Military Recognition scholarship. The military person must have sacrificed his/her life, been severely disabled or gone MIA after August 2, 1990. It will then pay the major expenses of any state resident but is also applicable to any school within the United States.
Another survivor’s scholarship is for the families and direct dependents of all those who were killed or severely disabled from the World Trade Center disaster. Like the Military Scholarship, it will cover all tuition and fees to a 4-year school. It can also be utilized by any offspring of the fearless rescue workers of the September 11 terrorist act.
New York State is known as a hub for media and journalism. As such, the state administers the Richard J. Roth Fellowship. This is for those looking to pursue a post-graduate degree journalism, public relations or any other form of media communications. It awards $29,500 a year towards either a Master’s or PhD.
While there are a number of other scholarships, endowments and other forms of financial aid inside the state, the last one being considered at the moment is the Undergraduate Session Assistants Program. It is an undergraduate internship plan that is unusual in a student must apply for it by October (instead of the usual winter or spring of the previous year). It has a maximum stipend of $3,500 a year and is mainly designed for New York State students to gain on-hand experience in their future career. That in itself can be invaluable. Taking the time to research scholarship and the many programs that are available can help to make college more affordable.
