No, you do not have to be 21 to purchase a gun. Federal law allows the sale of a long gun or a handgun between private parties of the same state as long as the purchaser is 18 years of age. You just can’t buy a handgun from a dealer until you are 21. You can get your CCW at age 18 in Maine.
