Be Aware of the Identity Theft Traps

Most identity thieves are targeting your social security number, your bank account, credit card information and all the corresponding PINs and passwords. It’s hard to protect yourself from a determined thief, but there are lots of things you can do to make it less likely you’ll fall victim to this crime.

If you want to keep your risk to a minimum, here’s what you need to be aware of.

1. Home computer: A professional hacker won’t have any problem accessing your data from a remote location. Software that prevents viruses and software from attacking your computer is crucial to your safety. It’s essential that you also have a firewall. Another good suggestion is to install identity theft software that is specifically designed to protect your privacy. If you want to keep your data protected, your best bet is to create strong passwords. It should be at least eight to ten characters in length. You need to use a combination of letters and numbers. Make sure it’s not too simple to figure out, such as your kid’s name and birth date.

2. Trash: If you throw it away, no doubt you think it doesn’t have any value. But the fact is that thieves often dig through trash cans to obtain any kind of personal details that can be used to assume your identity. Major targets are those credit card solicitation letters. It’s critical that these are completely destroyed before they leave your house.

3. Mail: For many people, it would never even cross their mind to lock their mailbox. But for anyone who wants your identifying information, the mailbox is a prime attraction. Just consider the amount of mail you receive that includes personal financial information. Imagine what an identity thief can do if he gets hold of your statements from the bank or credit card company.

4. Lockers: If you’re serious about identity theft protection, any place you store your handbag or wallet needs to be locked securely. This includes your locker at the gym or your workplace. Bring your own lock from home so nobody can steal a duplicate key from the front desk.

5. Handbag and wallet: Always be aware of and protect either of these two things. The purse or wallet of just about everyone has more than enough information for an identity thief to achieve his purposes. This includes your credit cards, checkbook, and bank card, not to mention any PINs you’ve written down.

6. Information: Be careful who you give out information to. Sometimes you’ll get a request for personal information that appears to be from a company that you deal with. In reality, it could just as easily be an identity thief impersonating an employee of that organization. It can take place both on the internet and on the telephone. It’s all too easy to give out confidential information in these circumstances.
