Would a horseshoe magnet work?
I know that moving a magnet in and out of a coil of wire produces a current, but could I produce a current by spinning a horseshoe magnet around a metal rod (as in the rod points up between the poles and the magnet is then rotated)? Or by spinning a horseshoe magnet around a coil of wire? Would the current be smaller? How much so?
Spinning a horseshoe magnet around a rod is equivalent to spinning the rod between the ends of the magnet, and that will not produce a current along the rod. It would produce small currents (eddy currents) within the portion of the rod between the magnet’s ends.
Spinning the magnet’s ends around a coil would produce a current in the coil.
The ‘trick’ is that there are magnetic lines of force running between the two ends. They are not really lines, but more a uniform field, but the ‘lines’ concept can be useful in visualizing them. It is when these lines cross a wire – where either the wire or the lines are moving, and where the line and the wire are not parallel, that you generate an electric current.
In the case of the magnet and rod, the lines are not moving relative to the rod. They are always going through its center, so there will not be a current. In the case of a coil, the lines will clearly be ‘cutting’ or moving across the wires, and so will generate a current.
