TV chefs that are flying the flag for Britain

Everyone has a favourite chef, someone who when nothing else is on tv, will turn to them to entertain them in their hour of boredom. Here are some of Britain’s favourite cooks on our TVs.

• Gordon Ramsey. Famous for the show Hell’s kitchen -his temper is as fiery a a stove and as fowl as the chicken his contestants prepare. One of only 3 chefs in the UK to have 3 michelin stars for his resturants at the same time. The public first recieved an ear full of profanity from the man in a documentary called boiling point. Boiling point saw Gordon trying to achieve his 3rd Michelin star, and made him an overnight celebrity. Other shows hes appeared in are Ramsays kitchen nightmares, the F word and hells kitchen. Both kitchen nightmares and hells kitchen have been remade for an america audience -increasing his popularity.
• Nigella Lawson. Daughter of former Conservative MP Nigel Lawson, she wrote the successful book ‘how to eat’ in 1998, and first appeared on tv with the show ‘Nigella bites’, which was aired in 2000 to 2001 on channel 4. This show won her the Television Broadcast of the Year at the Guild of Food Writers Awards. Her sultry, sensual approach to cooking has also gone down well in America and gained her fans both male and female. Though while popular with the pulbic, her daytime tv show ‘Nigella’ was cancelled after a week on air due to poor viewer figures. Just as good on paper, having sold well over a total of 3 million books, she is just a good with a pen as well as in front of a camera.
• Jamie Oliver. the ‘naked chef’ was spotted by the BBC when working as a ‘sous chef’ at the river cafe in Fulham. The naked chef ran from 1998-99 and was followed by ‘Pukka Tukka’ and ‘Jamie’s kitchen’. On tv in 2005 and it had the chefs own mission to get the quality of school dinners raised, which saw the government promise to put almost 300 million into school dinners over 3 years. In a move which has bought him in 1.2 million a year, Jamie became the main Sainburys ‘mascot’, appearing in ads for them since 1998. Loved by the british public for his ‘british-ishness’, this might explain why he hasnt gone over as well as he has in the rest of the world than the other chefs mentioned here.
