Rebels end to the 09 season
The 2009 season began with a ton of promise for the Ole Miss Rebels. A New Year’s Day bowl in the Cotton Bowl and a regular season win over national champion Florida had many Rebel fans thinking SEC title or more. A high preseason ranking had some fans dreaming of a national title. Since Mississippi plays in the always tough SEC they knew the opportunity to play for the title would be there if they could only run the table. Quarterback Jevan Snead returned for his junior season as well, giving the Rebels a presence under center they had not had since Eli Manning.
Ole miss still had a good season in 2009. Snead threw for 2,632 yards and 20 touchdowns, but he also lost four games. The national title dreams were over by the first game in conference play and the SEC title dreams were over by the third conference game. Even though Snead announced after the season he was going to go into the NFL draft, there were still plenty of positives. Ole Miss won the Cotton Bowl again and running back Dexter McCluster had a breakout season. The senior made his own case for the draft with 1,169 rushing yards, 8 touchdowns, and another 520 yards and three touchdowns receiving.
Ole Miss went to Memphis in the season opener and dominated with a 45-14 win. Their home debut was also a relatively easy win. Southeastern Louisiana provided little challenge in that game as the Rebels rolled 52-6. That roll stopped quickly when Mississippi traveled to South Carolina for its SEC opener. Ranked #4 in the nation, Ole Miss could generate little to no offense in the ESPN Thursday night feature. The Gamecocks generated just enough offense against a stout Ole Miss defense to come away with a 16-10 upset.
Ole Miss got back on the winning track in week 3 with a 23-7 win at Vanderbilt, but they missed a big opportunity for a name win when Alabama came to town. The eventual national champions humbled Mississippi 22-3 and barely allowed anything offensively. With the SEC title dreams over, Mississippi struggled to salvage anything out of the rest of its season. They did manage a 48-13 win over UAB and a 30-17 win over Arkansas before they were dealt another tough defeat.
Mississippi traveled to Auburn on Halloween night and came away with a 33-20 loss. They managed three more wins over Northern Arizona (38-14), Tennessee (42-17) and LSU (25-23) before suffering another tough defeat. In-state rival Mississippi State got their first Egg Bowl win in several years by upsetting Ole Miss in the final regular season game 41-27. It was a demoralizing way to end the year, but Mississippi was rewarded with another Cotton Bowl appearance. This time Ole Miss would take on Oklahoma State, one of the promising teams from the Big 12. In a defensive struggle McCluster ran for 184 yards and two scores in a 21-7 win. Patrick Trahan also added a late fumble return for a touchdown that sealed the win.
