Grommets Polyester

Can I grommet a thin fabric, such as a t-shirt?

The t-shirt in question is 50% cotton, 50% polyester, and of course, is not very thick. Is it possible for me to grommet it with 1/4 inch metal eyelets (using a hammer)? What could I do to make sure that the grommets didn’t come apart in the wash? Is there any other way I could grommet the shirt?

The grommets won’t come apart if set correctly, but thin fabric they’re set in might from the stress. You can use a backing stiffener of some kind (like a heavyweight interfacing, etc) on the underside of the fabric before setting the grommets which will provide support for the fabric though when it’s stressed.
