History And Qualities Of The German Shepherd
All the people owning a German shepherd could tell you about the willingnes to please and devotion to its master of this breed. It is a very versatile and intelligent as well as affable and laid back breed of dog. These dogs approach directly and fearless the job to accomplish though don’t appear hostile. It is a self-confident dog that looks a bit aloof, but in fact it’s quite approachable and one can confidently deal with it.
The All-Purpose Dog
The dogs of this breed are intelligent and can be trained to do different jobs, both police work or herding sheep. The German shepherd is an agile and obedient dog that can be used as a watchdog or in scent identification, it is good at tracking, rescue activities or can even lead blind people. Those having a dog of this breed say they are wonderful companions as well as excellent guardians as they are usally poised and calm but can be alert and startling when necessary.
An ideal German Shepherd is useful as a guardian and working animal that has a well muscled body that lends to its agility and power. This dog is a bit longer than tall and its deep body is well balanced as an effect of its muscular fitness. And, while on the topic about the German Shepherd one learns that it also seems to be very nimble and not at all clumsy or flabby and it may also be termed as noble.
Their body measurements are around two feet in lenght and 26 inches in height (at the shoulders) and of course, the females look more elongated and are a bit smaller but their bodies are still strong. They are clean boned and muscled and have a firm general frame. One perceives it to be of depth as well as solid and not bulky having a deep and capacious chest that has more than enough room for its heart and lungs.
They have a long and well-sprung rib cage
that makes them able to move freely and to easily trot. Their stomach is flat and firm and their loin is quite short, having only a slight tuck up. The German shepherd dogs have a well-laid back and long shoulder blades as well as straight and strong front legs. Their legs have not round but oval bones and their feet are compact and quite short. Their toes are well-arched and the nails of their thick, firm foot pads are dark and short.
The general aspect of the German shepherd’s head is noble, having any coarseles but with tightly fitted lips on its long and strong muzzle. The forehead is slightly arched and the strong jaws are filled with 42 teeth with 20 upper teeth and 22 lower teeth. Its eyes are medium sized and are set obliquely and the dark eyes of this breed show off its keen and intelligent expression. The ears are medium-sized and taper slightly and are erect unless the dog is reposing or in motion.
At the end of the 19th century, German captain Max von Stephanitz was looking for an all-purpose working dog to breed. He started from the local breed of landrace herding dogs. He was the creator of the schutzhund trial and prohibitted the breeding of dogs not passing it. The quick development of the specific abilities of the breed is due to the strict aplication of this trial.
The end of the First World War saw British and American soldiers being impressed with the abilities of this breed and they were imported to their own countries for breeding purposes where they became instant hits and this is how the history and origin of the German Shepherd unfolds
