Which Blackberries / Raspberries for zone 5?

I am looking to put in a few thornless blackberry bushes and raspberry bushes. They will be in separate garden boxes about 10ft apart. Can anyone recommend varieties that would be good for zone 5, be fairly low maintenance, and obviously the tastier the better. Also, if you have any soil prep recommendations, those would be welcome as well

It is not a good idea to plant perennial plants in boxes. A box sits up from the ground and loses the frost protection of being in the ground. A box freezes from the sides as well as the top.

There is no such thing as low maintenance Raspberries or Blackberries. They must be kept free of weeds and the old dead canes taken out every spring. If you don’t you cut down on berry production. They need fertilizing twice a year and water when it’s dry. You don’t mulch them either because they don’t like wet feet and in this same vein you should have good draining soil.

Almost all varieties will do well in your growing zone. I can’t recommend one because ours are not the thornless variety. We grow Red Latham and have done for 40 years
