The pre-cast concrete rectangular structures are called flags in NW England. In other parts of the world it is known as slabs. These flags are available not only in rectangular shape, but also in other geometrical shapes. These flags are patterned in such a way that they are utilized for making patios, garden path and other such works. They are light weight flags. For laying in public areas and foot paths heavy, thick and strong BS flags are used. They are known as stone flags.

Types of Flags/slabs:

Flags are classified in to three main groups. They are Textured, Riven and Decorative. Generally laying methods for each type of flags are the same. But, joining methods of these flags are decided by the nature of the flags. Dry sand jointing, polymeric jointing and mortar pointing are the famous methods widely used for joining. The flags, which are popularly used for laying patios and paths, are differently designed attractive flags. Choosing the apt flags will improve the show of the property. Most of them are not suited for vehicular traffic. But, good quality flags can be laid satisfactorily over a full concrete stretch.

Riven effect Paving:

Riven -effect patio flags are produced from cast concrete which looks like a replica of the traditional old stone flags. A wide variety of flags is offered with good quality suitable to one’s need. There are attractive and cheap budget flags are marketed by DIY chains. Best quality and perfect flags which resemble the genuine stone flags are also sold. For laying, traditional layouts better quality flags are available with various sizes according to the requirement. Big manufacturers produce quality flags with high cement content, best dye that are thick in general. They are produced in different sizes to ensure the quality.

They are basically 150mm module, which is a simple design formula. Mostly Riven flags are joined by mortor joining method. Dry sand jointing method is not suitable for joining them. The presence of uneven edges with various joint widths, which is generally exceeds 10 mm doesn’t suit for Dry Sand joining. Few cheap flags, which have smooth square edge, are also produced.
