When Can You Judge Your Child’s Fear to be Unhealthful?

Everybody feels fearful and anxious at some point of his or her life; in reality, one can’t really escape it as much as one cannot handle all of the external factors in everyday living. Children are, of course, just starting out with life, and are inexperienced with the obstacles that life can often throw people; this can cause a lot of anxiety on their part, which isn’t entirely bad given that they learn to manage it. Children experience gright and unease towards different kinds of situations depending on their age group, and some types of anxiety can actually be deemed ordinary. This age-appropriate fear isn’t something that should alarm parents, but it’s something that they should understand how to deal with to prevent these fears from becoming full-blown, real phobias. What’s important is that your child’s anxiety can be considered age appropriate; for instance, it’s hardly appropriate for a teenager to still feel excessively anxious about facing other people aside from their parents.

As children conquer their fears by steps, they initiate to acquire the self-belief to venture further out of their comfort zone. When simple fears become phobias that are became unsettled, children move past the age group where the fear is considered unacceptable and this deeply impedes their development. It’s true that facing one’s fears may become an elongated travel, but it’s better to face this journey with your child rather than have your child go through it alone, or never go through it at all. It wouldn’t be a good idea to build your life around your child’s phobias either; for example, it’s not a good idea to accommodate your child’s fear of monsters by surrounding his or her bed with a fence or removing the closet doors. You may also be lured to make life easier for you and your child by just giving in to your child’s longing not to confront this fear; this may appear very opportune, but it also means that you are giving your child over to the phobias that will eventually control his or her life.

Like any other type of fear, the only way to help your child overcome phobia is to help him or her handle it inch by inch until he or she knows that there’s nothing to fear from it. You can’t just ignore the phobia until it leaves because it most most likely wouldn’t, and you can’t just move things around in your life to accommodate the phobia either because this would be dysfunctional.
