Are There Downside Risks To Background Checks?

Needless to say, a simple background check could alter the course of your business. Say you were about to employ a guy for a new job in your business. The dude has said all the right things, looks efficient, yet incapable of hurting a fly; and you’re so impressed you have asked him to résumé first thing on Monday. Then your background investigation team that you carry out with inteligator comes in on Saturday night and says they just found out the guy was a career con man. Now how stupid could you feel? Good thing you had that check done, right?

Some of the most elaborate frauds these days are done on the Internet. Knowing that companies do background checks on new employees, many even go online to and attempt to falsify previous records that exist about them. Pity they would go to all that trouble to remain criminal rather than take the time and effort to build a truly veracious future.

There’s no telling what you could unveil with a simple background check. You could find out that the guy you’re about to employ is an ex-convict, or you could learn that he had downplayed his history – he was a bank manager who quit his last job because he couldn’t stand the lies anymore. You’d never know unless you had the check done. It is just like a do it yourself credit repair in that regard, because until you check your credit you don’t know where you stand.

We could all save ourselves a whole lot of trouble by doing the right things at the right time. A simple background check for instance would solve the problem of trust and uncertainty with a possible new member of staff once and for all. Issues that might arise from hiring the wrong kind would never arise. Corporations that hire without proper checking often find themselves in a bit of a mess as time goes on.

Some people have devoted the whole of their lives to doing background checks. They hire out their services to whoever will pay their undemanding bills just for the pleasure to travel and dig up details in the long dead past. True, most people like this have no animosity towards those they study, but this kind of fetish might need to be checked. Companies that hire out their background check services should look specifically for more down to earth professionals who do their work and… well, do no necessarily derive manic pleasures from doing a phone number reverse lookup or other type of check.

One of the easiest ways to do background check is to talk to the police. Take a gander at their records; drop a name here or there. Many times the police are willing to help, but not when they are dealing with a PI that they don’t particularly like. For your own part, just ensure that your investigator is someone likeable.

Background checks might be unpleasant, but they are necessary because they help unveil potential threats. The vacant position being advertised could be a delicate one that requires trustworthy personnel with integrity. Although you’d probably find these qualities on every CV, you can only be sure that an applicant truly has them if you examine their past to verify their claims.

The library and the Internet provide easy access to information. A visit to the public building would expose you to public records, and with a few clicks you could have found all you need about your new employee. If you like what you see, go ahead and employ them; if you don’t like it, don’t.

There are times when a background check is not necessary. An experienced interviewer could take on look and can tell from body language and the sharpness – or not – with which a candidate answered questions. More importantly, if the applicant cannot respond reasonably to the most basic queries concerning his supposed ‘experience’, then you know he’s not the man for you.
