Is it legal for a HOA to ban the flying of American Flags?

I live in an area with a HOA in Maryland. Recently I was told we are not allowed to fly any flags including American flags from our house. We are only allowed to put a couple of the tiny hand size ones in our gardens. I find this very unpatriotic. I like flying my flag for the 4th and other national holidays. Our HOA also does not allow us to post Security signs in our front yard…”because it’s free advertising to the security company” I think that’s just one of those dumb laws.

Yes, they can do that. You agreed to be bound by the HOA’s rules when you moved into your home. It may be unpatriotic, but its enforceable.

FYI, you are not the first person in this country to be in this situation. I have yet to see a homeowner prevail against an HOA over flag displays.
