Alabama Wedding Theme?
I want to do something very different for my wedding by blending my Greek heritage with my fiance’s Southern pride. He hails from Alabama, but his family is long gone and he doesn’t go back much, so there’s no one there to ask.
I’d like to incorporate some traditional Southern/Alabaman customs into the processional and the reception. I am planning to have two Greek evzones come down the aisle carrying the Greek flag and behind them I’d like something similar but with the state of Alabama flag instead. But I don’t know what kind of uniform defines Alabama. It’s not a cowboy culture, so I can’t use cowboys. Would soldiers work? State troopers? I’m at a loss. Does anyone know what would work in this situation?
Also, any suggestions on Southern decor, such as centerpieces for the tables, flowers, and anything else you can think of would be helpful!
The easiest way to draw some Southern style into your wedding is through your flowers and food. Classic Southern flowers that would make nice centerpieces are Magnolia flowers, or cherry blossoms. Black-eyed Susans are pretty Southern too, I’m not sure if they bloom in Alabama a lot, but there’s lots in Georgia.
Traditional food doesn’t have to mean barbecue. Lots of pretty vegetable sides, fresh tomatoes, potato salad. There’s no shortage of Southern inspired food.
I’m sure there’s more to your fiancee than Alabama though. If there’s a particular sport or something he likes, you can use that to come up with a neat groom’s cake. The whole wedding doesn’t need to incorporate “Alabama”, just like Greek heritage need not permeate the whole day either.
You just want it to be pretty, to represent what you and your groom both care about, and for your guests to be comfortable and well fed.
