The National Iranian Flag

Iran is one of those countries that have been in the news more often than most others recently. Regardless of what is been said, especially in terms of the more negative broadcasting, the country is represented by a wonderful national flag that is hoisted on flag poles throughout the world. Interestingly, and like most national flags, the Iranian tricolor was adopted some 30 years ago, and is considered a fitting representation of that which came forth from the country’s revolution to many Iranians.

It does not come as a surprise that the flag specifics and details are governed by law, including its shape and emblem. This flag is considered a tricolor since it displays three colors on the three horizontal bands, each equally sized. From top to bottom, the colors are green, white and red. The emblem of Iran is shown on the white band, in the center portion of this respective national flag.

In the constitution that was produced back in 1980, the government changed the design of the flag as well as the state seal. The symbol of the Lion and the Sun were substituted by a new symbol, which consisted of 4 crescents and a line. Interestingly, the 4 crescents combined form the world “Allah.” The “symbols of old” are still used by Iranian communities in excel. This is done as a means to display their opposition to the current Islamic Republic.

Called officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, this republic is located in the area of Western Asia. Iran is the 18th largest country in the world as far as square area is concerned and counts a little less than eighty million people. The Iranian territory is bordered by the countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, and by Iraq and Turkey to the (north-) west. The country’s capital is Tehran, which is also the largest city in Iran. In the past the country would be referred to as “Persia.” The current designation is relatively new to the international community.

Iran has had a series of different flags that were used displayed from flag poles in the past. Even though the current tricolor is some thirty years old, different versions were in existence prior to its official adoption. Changes that were made include the shade of colors and the use of symbols on the flag, including its current emblem. This country truly has a rich history when it comes to historical flags!

I have studied a flag or two in my life time and find the Iranian flag to be one of the more fascinating historical flags. Flags are used both indoors and outdoors. Those considering flying the flag of Iran from aluminum flag poles, understand that flags work very hard if left attached to a flag pole twenty four hours per day.
