The Right Shoes Will Prevent Foot Pain
Many people are troubled by foot problems for one main reason. Ill fitting shoes.
Blisters, neuromas and aching joints are all conditions that can be alleviated by choosing footwear that fits and is right for what you want to do. Well fitting shoes should support the feet and how they function hence it is important to choose shoes that fit well.
In the course of an average day we will each walk around 10,000 steps and each time the foot hits the ground it must withstand the concentrated weight of your whole body. When walking, each time our feet come into contact with the ground they must initially adapt to the surface that we are walking on. Each foot will then become tense in order to support the body as we move forward. Various shoe designs exist in order to support this cycle. For example, walking shoes will often have very strong rigid soles that are good for even the roughest terrain.
A factor that many people overlook when shopping for shoes is the natural swelling of the feet that takes place throughout the day. The main cause of swelling is gravity. If you spend your working day on your feet you will know how much your feet can swell during the day. As fluids build up your shoes can feel increasingly tight and uncomfortable. You can lessen foot swelling by putting the feet up periodically throughout the course of the day.
Clearly footwear that is too small will only exacerbate the discomfort experienced as your feet swell throughout the day. Shoes that are too short or too narrow will make your feet ache. It is therefore important to get your feet measured and accurately sized. So when shopping for shoes be certain to make an allowance for the swelling that will inevitably take place. As a rough guide, try to allow about a fingers width of space, inside the shoes, in front of your big toes.
These days many people shop for clothes and shoes online. Not trying on shoes before buying them can lead to problems as sizes can vary greatly between manufacturers. The trick here is to go into a shoe store and try on the style and make of shoes that you want and then find them online at a cheaper price. This may not be popular with your local shoe stores but you can be more confident that, when your shoes arrive, they will fit.
A well fitted pair of shoes should never need to be worn in. If they fit properly and they are right for what you want to do in them then they should be comfortable.
Selecting the right shoes for what you want to do in them is vitally important. It would be mad to wear a pair of six inch stillettos to run a marathon. Simply standing in a pair of six inch stillettos is more than I could ever do. But they have their place. If you spend all day on your feet then choose comfortable shoes that are as flat as possible with generous space in front of your big toe and ideally laces that can be loosened as your feet swell.
A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. There are a great variety of sports shoes in a variety of style, some designed for specific applications like jogging on concrete surfaces. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I love trainers of all descriptions and will probably be wearing a pair of Vans or Nike training shoes when I finally meet my maker. There are so many cool styles and colors available today that you shouldn’t have any trouble finding some that not only fit well but look great.
