Falling Leaves
Does anyone know the family’s reaction to ‘Falling Leaves’?
I have just read the book ‘Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter’ by Adeline Yen Mah. I was wondering if the rest of her family are known to have responded to this work?
Hey there. I’ve read both this book and her other autobiography, Chinese Cinderella (it’s aimed at younger children and covers her childhood years up to age 14).
As far as I know, she write this book after her stepmother died to avoid persecution by her family, which you’ll know if you’ve read her notes. She very likely cut off ties with her family after Niang forged her father’s original will to prevent her inheritng his money. So I haven’t read about any reaction from her family, I think they all had abandoned her at that point, alone with her husband and the last paragraphs really emphasise this.
So unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll ever know what they thought of her story. Possibly they would have threatened her if they’d known, so she might have kept it secret.
It’s a tragic story… but one that really puts Chinese philosphies in perspective.
