Any advice for new renter?

My boyfriend and I are currently looking around for an apartment, and this is our first apartment so we’re new to the game. Do you have any advice for us? What kind of things should we look for when viewing an apartment? What kind of questions should we ask the landlord? What kind of things should we see as potential red flags? Basic real estate advice or tips from personal experience will be appreciated. Thank you!

I agree with the previous comments and I cannot stress the importance of keeping documentation (pictures, contracts, property policies/amenities, proof of deposit/rent payments, etc.) enough. Any information you get over the phone should be documented as well: date/time of conversation, who you talked to, representations he/she made, etc.

The link below has some great tips that I think will be helpful. There’s also a link to the landlord and tenant laws of all 50 states so you can get educated on your rights. And if you find a place you’re really interested in, I’d ask current/former tenants about their experiences as they have nothing to gain by lying. Best wishes!
