Embroidered Sewn
What’s a good sewing machine needle to use for sewing vinyl?
I’m sewing (pre-embroidered) vinyl as part of a Halloween costume. Will a denim needle work? Is there a more specialized needle? I’d rather not sew it by hand, and I doubt that a normal needle will work well.
I’d use a Schmetz microtex or other slender, small needle, probably about a size 12/80 or 14/90 on most knit-backed vinyl, which is what I assume you’ve got. Denim would be my second choice, followed by universal point. Roller feet, teflon feet, or tissue paper may be needed to help. Don’t use a leather (wedge needle) (it cuts); make your stitches longer than you might on a similar weight woven, to help avoid the “tear on dotted line” issue.
