Sometimes I am gently reminded about my first introduction to what is commonly known today as the Logo. As I recall it was 1984 and I was eleven years old and attending primary school in Catford, South East London. As memory has it my school uniform consisted of a racing green blazer accessorized with a striped silver and green tie with white shirt tailed with a pair of grey trousers. Not too much that’s special about knocking around the school playground in a uniform. Things were about to change though when I saw Paul Laurence arrive at school one day wearing a waterproof sports jacket with a Lacoste crocodile logo on it.

I wanted one. Paul Laurence had one I wanted one. Paul was a new kid on the block that I quickly made friends with. Then one day he changed from demure innocent kid into a pre teen soccer casual. Rapid changes followed shortly after with a new wedge style haircut with highlights, Sergio Tacchini trainers, Farah trousers. Each piece of clothing sported its own unique Logo design. Paul was made even more mysterious than he was. Suddenly the new boy that had only just recently moved to the neighbourhood had become a PAul Weller mini me and he was attracting everyones interest including mine.

Each day I remember nagging my dad for clothes when I got home. ‘Pauls got this¦., Pauls got that¦. My parents life was about to be made a living hell by Paul Laurence. How where they going to adapt to their nagging only child wanting these pieces of clothing that had strange sounding names? My Nan intervened. She planned to create her own unique custom logo design based on the Lacoste crocodile. The nagging little schoolboy that I was I instantly turned my nose at her suggestion even though, out of the kindness of her heart she was agreeing to make the logo. Logos that had arrived from strange faraway lands. Would Nan be able recreate the alchemy?
