Division Flag

Division Flag
After Klitschko brothers retire, what do you think will become of heavyweight division?

Boxing’s flag division is in bad condition as it is, but what will happen when Klitschkos leave? They are the only two real fighters who have been carrying it and keeping it’s credibility ever since Lennox Lewis retired, so what then remains?

There are the two top contenders Haye and Povetkin who turned out to be completely spineless. Can anything be expected from them?

Then there is Ruslan Chagaev, a former champion who is indeed a very skilled boxer, but whose career was destroyed and turned into shambles by injuries and sickness over the last 3 years.

Tomasz Adamek, also a skilled fighter, but clearly not a real heavyweight or Odlanier Solis maybe, a great natural talent, but a man morbidly obese who does absolutely no training whatsoever?

Can any of these people do anything to make a statement for the heavyweight division or will we have to wait for Boytsov, Wilder or some other youngster to come through and how long do you think that will take?

The division will have an interregnum—a period without an emperor. But I agree with Richard, most likely the dominant successors will still come from Eastern Europe or Central Asia. And the main challenge will come from Canada and European countries like Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy which still have very strong amateur boxing programs from where potential pro talents could be developed. I am just hoping that another batch of talented Cuban amateur heavyweight standouts defect to the West so that at least there will be strong representation from the Americas. As for the emergence of another American or Afro-American great heavyweight/s to join the fray, I guess we have to wait a little longer when the flagging US economy might motivate many of its big, athletic youngsters to try pro boxing again as their old folks did to get out of the ghettos and out of drugs and trouble.
