Why are the Cincinnati Reds Playing the Cleveland Indians?

I understand baseball pretty well, but what is confusing me are the Reds playing the Indians? The Reds are an NL team and the Indians are an AL team, I thought they couldn’t play unless under certain conditions, such as the World Series. Could someone please explain this to me.

In recent years, they have introduced interleague play in which the American League plays the National League. At least one series is played against the team in your city. So it would be Mets vs Yanks, Rays Vs Marlins, Texas Rangers Vs. Astros, Indians Vs Red, Angels Vs. dodgers.
