Is there a big difference between all sign languages?

I’m currently trying to learn a bit of the American Sign Language, and I am surprised by the list of sign languages that exist. Is the difference between them a big one?
I know there is a difference! I need to know if it is a big difference, that’s all.

Big enough that most of them are mutually unintelligible.
