Hike at Lake Leatherwood Park in Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Hiking is a great outdoor activing consisting of walking often on hiking trails. Hiking is available for almost everyone regardless of age or ability level to discover the outdoors. Posted hiking times will let you know how long it takes for one trip around the trail. Trails in state parks lead to lakes and vistas teaming with wild life and uncountable adventures. It’s always best to backpack with another person and we don’t recommend hiking alone. Be sure to take precautions should you decide to ever hike alone. You will get a mental lift from being in touch with nature in addition to the physical lift from hiking. A state park may be only a few miles from home.
Arkansas trails are designed for day hiking with trails typically found in the Ozark Highlands. After the leaves have fallen you can see new vistas and find stone walls and other remnants from past residents. Arkansas boasts over 1500 miles of hiking trails, and Eureka Springs, Arkansas has two great hiking trails.
Just two miles west of Eureka Springs off U.S. Highway 62 is Lake Leatherwood Park; a 1600-acre municipal park surrounding an 85 acre spring fed lake. It is a place of natural serenity. Lake Leatherwood is formed by one of the largest hand-cut native limestone dams in the country. The dam and several structures at the park were built in the early 1940s by the WPA.Lake Leatherwood Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Lake has about 15 miles of trails around the lake and in the park. No motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trails. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy solitude, bird watching, cool springs, an intermittent creek, historic stone walls and bridges, unusual rock formations and the beauty of nature. The hiking trail circles the lake and is about 4 miles long. You can explore the lake in one day and is great for beginners or kids. One end of the lake is very shallow and usually has water fowl on it. You will see all varieties of wild life. The water at the other end of the lake is deep and clear. Fishing is good here because few people use the lake.
The second place to hike in Eureka Springs is at Black Bass Lake. Black Bass Lake is a former Eureka Springs’ water supply reservoir situated behind businesses on U.S. Highway 62 including the Inn of the Ozarks and Community First Bank. New miles hiking and biking trails were built around the lake in the heart of Eureka Springs. Black Bass Lake has a 115 year old limestone dam which holds the 13 acre spring-fed lake. The trail is three-foot wide and designed for easy shore access for biking, hiking and fishing. “This is truly undiscovered country,” remarked Jeff Feldman, Greater Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce President. This lake is a quiet “secret” in Eureka Springs. This area shows how the Ozarks would have looked to the first white men; except for the existence of the dam. Visit the Lake in winter for a special treat especially after a snow.”
The Eureka Chamber of Commerce supports a proposal to connect all the great trails in town and at Black Bass and Lake Leatherwood to the tiny hamlet of Beaver on Table Rock Lake. Come to Eureka Springs for the hiking trails and to see the town. Whether you camp out or stay in a cabin, you can find great hiking trails close by.
